The Firm
Founded in 2020 on the conviction that the merchants who actually build the online economy deserve serious, sophisticated legal representation — from anywhere in the world.
A practice built around an unmet need.
Zuyd Legal opened its doors in Amsterdam in 2020 to address a gap that had become impossible to ignore. Across the world, thousands of legitimate online businesses — small importers, growing direct-to-consumer brands, family-owned distributors, ambitious solo founders — were finding themselves cut off from their own revenue by payment processors operating with little transparency and even less accountability. Their brands were being copied with impunity. Their accounts were being suspended on platforms that controlled their entire customer base.
The traditional legal profession, oriented toward larger corporate matters, had little patience for the technical particulars of these disputes. We took the opposite view. Reading the merchant agreements, the underwriting policies, the platform terms of service, the international IP frameworks — that became our daily work. We made it our practice.
Five years later, we have represented clients in more than forty jurisdictions, recovered tens of millions of euros in frozen funds, defended hundreds of brands against infringement, and built ongoing legal partnerships with online businesses on six continents.
What we have built since 2020.
Three convictions, consistently applied.
Discretion
The best legal work is rarely visible. Most of our matters are resolved through carefully drafted correspondence that the public will never see. We protect client confidentiality as the first duty of the firm, not as an afterthought to it.
Precision
We do not threaten what we cannot deliver, and we do not advance arguments we cannot defend. Every demand letter we send rests on a specific contractual clause, statutory provision, or regulatory obligation. Bluster is unprofessional and, more importantly, ineffective.
Practicality
Our clients are running businesses. They need outcomes — funds returned, accounts reinstated, brands protected, contracts honoured — not a treatise on the legal issue at hand. We aim to be the most practical legal counsel a business has ever worked with.
What sets the firm apart.
Speed When It Matters
Most matters are reviewed within 24 hours of contact. Demand letters typically dispatched within five to seven business days of engagement.
Genuinely International
Clients in more than 40 jurisdictions. Working knowledge of payment, e-commerce, and IP regimes across the EU, UK, US, and Asia-Pacific.
Single Point of Contact
You will not be passed between junior associates and partners. The lawyer you speak to is the lawyer working on your matter, end to end.
Predictable Fees
Fixed-fee structures wherever possible. No invoice should ever surprise you. We agree scope and price in writing before work begins.
Outcome-Focused
We measure ourselves by what we recover and what we resolve, not by the volume of work we generate. 96% of matters resolve without litigation.
Discreet by Default
Confidentiality is our first duty. Our most successful work is the work no one outside the engagement will ever know about.
Zuyd, the south.
"Zuyd" is the old Dutch spelling of "Zuid" — south. It appears throughout the cartography of the seventeenth-century Dutch trading companies, in the names of streets and waterways across the Low Countries, and in the gabled façades of Amsterdam itself. We chose it because the name belongs unmistakably to this place — and because the firm's outlook is rooted in the practical, mercantile tradition that built it.
Our clients ship goods, take payments, build brands, and deal with strangers in foreign jurisdictions. So did the merchants who first walked these canals. The legal questions have changed; the underlying need for sound counsel has not.
Amsterdam-based, worldwide in practice.
Our office is in Amsterdam and our practice is grounded in Dutch and European law. But we represent clients from every major commercial jurisdiction. Through a vetted network of trusted local counsel in over forty countries, we coordinate seamless legal support wherever your business takes you.
